LG is one of the leading TV sellers in the USA. The LG TV brand has an established reputation for being reliable.
LG is one of the few manufacturers worldwide that makes LCD and OLED display panels in-house. Hence, LG has a great track record when it comes to the quality of its display panels.
But, as with any other product, even LG TVs tend to get some glitches or faulty parts occasionally.
Here in this article, I will show you how you can troubleshoot one of the most common problems, which is a random blinking or flickering of the screen.
The most common reasons for blinking or flickering LG TV screens include faulty power cords, faulty display cords, problems with the display source, power settings, and hardware errors.
You can try to troubleshoot the issue by following the given step-by-step instructions.
Try playing streaming media on another device.
Whenever you try to troubleshoot any display device, it is foremost important to make sure that the problem lies in the device and not in the streamed content (i.e., movie recording).
Hence, if you are viewing the video from some streaming device or other source, try to run the same video stream on either a laptop, monitor, or other TV. Make sure to note the playing time when the screen flickers or blinks on your LG TV and compare it to other devices. If you see the same flickering or blinking on the other device in the same timeframe, it indicates that the problem is with streaming media but not with the LG TV.
Try restarting your LG TV.
If you are seeing this type of flickering or blinking less often or on an occasional basis, it might be some small bug or a harmless hardware glitch. It will mostly automatically disappear with a quick TV restart.
Turn the LG TV off and turn it on again.
You can also try turning it off and switching the power plug off for 10 seconds after its power light turns off and turning it on again.
It is often the simplest and most needed solution to fix such rare glitches.
Check the display cable and power cord.
Flickering or blinking of the LG TV screen can also occur when the attached cables are loose or damaged.
To check a power cord, unplug the power cord and re-plug it again, make sure it is not loose, and check if the flickering or blinking stops or not.
If you are using a power cord other than the one that came with the LG TV, it may have inferior quality (cheap Chinese cords). Try to arrange a good-quality power cord for testing and check if the flickering stops.
For display cable, based on the LG TV port you are using, you might be using HDMI cable or other display cables. Perform the same task with the power cord: switch the LG TV off, unplug it, and re-plug it properly.
In the case of the third-party display cable, try to replace it with some branded cable for testing and check if the problem is resolved or not.
Check the streaming devices and connected cables.
If you are using some kind of streaming device to display a video on your TV, like Roku, Apple TV, Android Box, or Amazon Fire Stick, if you are experiencing flickering or blinking, there might be a fault with the connected cables or the device itself.
Check if the flickering or blinking of the device stops after you re-plug the cable properly. If not, check again with a new replacement cable.
In the event of a faulty device or a faulty cable, replace it.
Check the interference of any connected external device.
If there are other devices connected to the TV, like some USB device, Xbox controller, Google Chrome cast, or Anycast, remove all the devices. Restart the TV and check the television.
If it fixes the issue, you can find the issue-causing devices by plugging them one by one separately.
Check the Internet connection.
Sometimes LG TVs may act weirdly if they are connected to a slow or improperly configured internet connection.
Make sure your internet is working properly and reboot the router.
You may need to disconnect the TV from your router. Disconnect the TV (forget or delete the network). Reconnect the TV by entering the password again. Check the connectivity issue and make sure the connection is working properly.
If the TV and router are connected via an Ethernet cable, make sure connectors are properly inserted in both the LG TV and the router.
Always make sure that you are inserting the Ethernet cable connecting to the TV into the LAN port and not the WAN port. You can identify the WAN port via a distinct color from other ports.
Do a hard reset on your LG TV.
Hard resetting a TV is the process of resetting the whole power cycle of the TV. Performing the hard reset ensures that all the hardware components are reset to their default power state and no temporary hardware bug causes the issue.
To perform the hard reset on your LG TV, turn off the power switch and then remove all the cables from the TV. When all the lights on the TV go out, press and hold the power button on your LG TV for 10–15 seconds. It will remove any residual electricity in the TV’s electric components. Wait for almost an hour (usually 15 minutes is enough, but an hour is better) before plugging any wire.
After an hour or more, reconnect the required cables and check if the flickering or blinking stops or not.
Check the electrical interference of any other nearby running device.
If the electricity wiring connections in the house are not properly done, the other devices in the house may create an electrical fluctuation in the power supply of your LG TV. In such a case, your LG TV may display blinking or flickering behavior.
The easiest way of identifying such an issue is by checking the TV’s behavior when operating other devices. Check if your TV blinks, flickers, or hangs when you start your fan, AC, washing machine, heater, or similar device, which can cause a sudden change in the electricity demand of your house.
If you see such behavior, consult a licensed electrical repairer to check the fault. You may need to install a voltage stabilizer in your house.
Reconfigure the display settings.
When viewing the video in Ultra HD (4K/8K) mode with specific settings, your device may not keep up with the needed power and graphics resources. Try to lower the display quality settings. In most cases, such issues are covered under the warranty and may be eligible for free service or, in some cases, free device replacement.
Reconfigure the energy settings of the LG TV.
Like the above cause, the wrong power settings may be the reason for the blinking or flickering of the LG TV.
Go to the picture settings section of your LG TV’s settings menu and turn off the energy-saving mode.
If the energy settings were at fault after turning the safe mode off, you will see that blinking and flickering of the screen will stop.
Get your LG TV repaired by a professional.
If following all the above steps does not fix the issue, your LG TV might need a repair.
If your LG TV still has a warranty period left, get it inspected and repaired at the nearest LG service center. If it is out of warranty, you can also go to a nearby professional electronics repair workshop or an LG service center to get the issue fixed.
Conclusion
The flickering or blinking of LG TVs may appear due to various reasons. Hopefully, in most cases, it can be resolved at home without any need for serious repairs. In the case of a hardware failure or malfunction, you may need to visit a repair workshop.
